My brothers and sisters in Christ,
This letter is going to be a bit different from our recent letters, but what it covers is certainly something that needs to be seen and recognized in today’s world of wars, conflict, and despair.
I spent most of July last year (2017) in the south of France with the TPS France Trip team serving two local protestant churches with VBS camps for the children. The trip was filled with amazing works of God, showing just how powerful He is and still actively works in a country that although has a rich religious history, is now very much spiritually dead.
The buildup for the trip and early days of the trip were spent in earnest prayer by the trip participants and parents, friends, and other contacts of the participants from all around the world. This prayer was centered on the team firstly, that each and every member would know their individual worth and purpose as a member and that the team as a one in Christ would be united in Him for His work. Secondly, it centered on the children and families of the children coming to the VBS each week. Our prayer for this was that 60 children from near the church in Marseille would come and hear Jesus taught.
When the trip started and the whole team had gathered in Marseille there were about 45 children registered for the VBS, but within a few days on the first day of VBS we had exactly 60 children registered! It was an incredible answer to prayer, not just in its precision to the exact number we had been praying for. As for the first prayer point, by the first morning of VBS it was evident that the team would be united and of one mind under Christ. Possibly the most amazing sign of God at work in that community was on the last day when we were told that 3 of the children, of whom not all were church goers, had received the Lord into their lives as their Savior.
For the second week we were going to serve at a church that we had never been to before except to see their new building shortly after they bought it and had gutted the whole place for an extensive refurbishment project. When we arrived on the Saturday for dinner at the church building the pastor presented us with the whole building, mostly complete all of which we could use. This was an amazing thing for them as scarcely a week earlier they were worshipping in a small side hall whilst the main hall was still being finished.
The church was given permission to use the whole site only just in time for the VBS we were running that week. To the whole team this was an obvious declaration of God’s power in providing us with a large, new building completely open for the week! And for the church it was a sign of His faithfulness in answering their prayers. Ever since before they bought the building they had been praying that they would be able to use it for the TPS France Trip’s VBS and that was the very first thing the whole building was used for! By the end of that week two more children had been added to the number of God’s family!
There are multiple more ways that God’s sovereign hand was seen at work during this trip with illness and injury proving to be necessary to give time to those involved to sit back and watch God at work, finding a passport which had been lost during the initial flight, canceled plans being turned later into better experience, and more!
I hope that through this you will have seen God at work and will have been encouraged in you walk with Christ.
1 Corinthians 15 verse 58 says “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” ESV
