For many of us, today is another day in quarantine – another day sitting at home anxious about
what will happen with COVID-19. “How much further will it spread? How much longer will we have to wait until there’s a cure or a vaccine? When will life go back to normal?” Sometimes these questions can overwhelm us. But how can we escape this spiral of worry and anxiety if it is all we ever hear on the news and the radio and from our friends and family?
Despite all of this, there is one place we can go to be free from the worries of this virus: the Bible. It may sound cliché, but reading the Bible is one of the best ways to refocus our thoughts on God instead of the world. In particular, Psalm 136 is a wonderful passage to remind us of who God is and what He has done.
This psalm starts by telling us to"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good,” and each verse ends with “His love endures forever.”An important thing to remember is that no matter what our situation is, we will always have something to thank God for. Whether it be that you are still able to buy groceries or even that you have a place to be quarantined in, it is important to remember the little things that God has provided. As this first verse says, God is good, which means that He always has our best interest in mind. His plan and purpose for our lives is perfect, so we can trust that no matter what is happening in the world, God’s goodness will prevail.
If you can’t think of anything to thank God for, you can remember how He has been faithful in the past. In verses 10-25 of Psalm 136, the psalmist describes how God has been faithful to His people in the past: He led the Israelites out of Egypt, He parted the Red Sea, and He protected the Israelites as He led them through the wilderness. Even in those actions, we can see God’s faithfulness.
Another thing to thank God for is just for being who He is. We can see that verses 4 through 9 describe God’s awesome power. These verses say to give thanks “to Him who alone does great wonders, who by His understanding made the heavens, who spread out the earth upon the waters, who made the great lights — the sun to govern the day, the moon and stars to govern the night…” How awesome is God, that He created our entire world, the entire universe!
If God is so great, if He has done so much for those whom He loves, then why should we worry about this virus? Can He not provide for us and protect us just as He did for the Israelites? I encourage you all to take time to focus on God today. Remember who He is, what He has done, and have faith that He will continue to be the same God that He has always been. After all, the psalmist includes the phrase "His love endures forever” for a reason. God will never stop providing for and protecting those whom He loves.
